Your Tendons Are Still Running on Your Teenage Collagen
Your muscles rebuild all the time. The core of your Achilles mostly doesn't. Here's what actually toughens tendons, what collagen peptide trials found, and where the "Wolverine" peptides really stand.

Your Tendons Are Still Running on Your Teenage Collagen
You added a second leg day, bought new running shoes and felt amazing for three weeks. Then your heel started grumbling every morning on the stairs.
Your muscles were ready for the upgrade. Your tendons were still reading the memo.
Why do tendons fall behind muscles?
Because they rebuild on a totally different clock.
Danish researchers used a clever trick to measure this. Nuclear bomb tests in the 1950s and early '60s spiked a form of carbon in the air, and everything alive soaked it up. That gives scientists a date stamp inside your tissues.
When they checked Achilles tendons from 28 adults, the core carried the carbon levels from roughly the person's first 17 years of life. Muscle samples, by contrast, showed constant renewal.
So the middle of your Achilles is, more or less, the one you grew as a teenager. Muscle gets remodeled all the time. Tendon is the slow kid in gym class.
That was a small study of one tendon's core, done on forensic samples. Tendons still respond to training, as you're about to see. They just don't sprint.
Your muscles take the stairs. Your tendons take the elevator, and it's slow.
So how do you train a slow tissue?
You give it time and steady load. A few habits fit what the research shows:
Lift heavy-ish and keep at it. In a 2023 UK trial, young men did 15 weeks of leg training. Both groups got noticeably stiffer, sturdier knee tendons, supplement or not. The lifting did the work.
Ramp up slowly. Your muscles may feel ready for more weeks before your tendons are. If you're adding runs, jumps or volume, add a little at a time.
Respect the morning grumble. A tendon that keeps complaining isn't a toughness test. That's a good time to back off and see a sports medicine pro or physical therapist.
Sleep and eat enough protein. Not glamorous, but recovery happens off the gym floor. Our post on sleep and growth hormone covers why.
Where do collagen peptides come in?
Tendons are mostly collagen. Collagen supplements are chopped-up collagen, which makes them short peptides you drink. So it's a fair question.
A small Australian study gave eight men gelatin with vitamin C an hour before six minutes of jump rope. Their blood showed about double the marker of new collagen being made. Neat, but that's a blood marker over three days, not a stronger tendon.
The training trials are where it gets interesting, and messy:
A German trial (2022): 40 lifters, 14 weeks. The collagen group's Achilles grew more than placebo, but stiffness and strength improved the same in both groups. A collagen research company was part of the author team.
A UK trial (2023): 39 lifters, 15 weeks. Collagen added nothing measurable over placebo.
A Japanese trial (2025): 50 non-exercising young men, 16 weeks. Collagen tendons got stiffer than placebo, but they didn't get bigger or stronger. Researchers from a food company ran it.
A 2026 review pulled together eight trials, almost all in young men. Its read: collagen might help tendons remodel when paired with hard training, but it didn't add strength.
Translation: a maybe for tendon structure, a no for muscle strength. Nobody tested whether it prevents injuries.
And the "Wolverine" peptides everyone's injecting?
BPC-157 and TB-500 are the internet's favorite tendon fixes. A review published Oct 27 in a major orthopaedic journal went through the evidence.
For BPC-157, the musculoskeletal research is mostly small animal studies. Human data come down to one small case series with no comparison group. For TB-500, it's lab dishes and rodents. None of them has an approved musculoskeletal use, and the authors flagged real worries about what's actually in commercial vials. Both are also banned in tested sport.
Literature, not lore: "it healed a rat's tendon" and "it'll heal yours" are two very different sentences.
We've written about both in more depth, including a placebo-controlled BPC-157 hamstring trial registered this year.
If you remember one thing…
Tendons get tougher on their own slow schedule. Steady, heavy training is the proven lever, collagen is a small maybe, and the injectable "fixes" haven't been tested in people yet.
