Tesamorelin and Egrifta: Related sequences, different products

Tesamorelin is a stabilized growth-hormone-releasing hormone analogue. In 2010, FDA approved it as Egrifta for a narrow indication: reducing excess abdominal fat in HIV-infected adults with lipodystrophy. Subsequent labeling and a 2014 JAMA trial in HIV-associated fatty liver kept the compound inside that clinical frame. The frame — population, product, indication — matters as much as the sequence.

What travels with an approval, and what does not

An RUO tesamorelin lot is a different product from Egrifta WR. It does not carry the manufacturing process, the device, the counseling context, or the labeled indication. Keeping those distinctions clear is the same habit this journal uses for SS-31 and Forzinity: related chemistry can share a literature without sharing a product identity.

A labeled indication is tied to a product and a population — and that context is part of what the approval means.

For a laboratory, tesamorelin is a GHRH-receptor agonist with published human PK/PD in a specific disease. That is a solid reason to study GH-axis signaling. Inspired Labs will name the analogue and the literature. It will keep the approved product’s indication attached to the product that holds it.
