Cartalax Has Only Met Cartilage in a Dish

Longevity forums call Cartalax a joint "bioregulator" for aging well. It's three amino acids, Epitalon minus one, and it has only been tested on cells and rats.

Cartalax Has Only Met Cartilage in a Dish

You stand up from the couch and your knees make a noise like bubble wrap. Somewhere online, a "bioregulator" peptide promises to talk your cartilage young again.

It's called Cartalax, and it's having a moment in longevity circles. The honest version: your joints respond to some very boring habits, and Cartalax has only been tested on cells in dishes and a few rats. Habits first.

What actually keeps joints moving as you age?

Weird fact: the cartilage that cushions your joints has no blood vessels. Nothing pumps food to it.

Instead, it drinks from the joint fluid around it. Water flowing through the cartilage carries nutrients to the cells inside, and pressure is what moves that water. Picture a kitchen sponge that only gets wet when you squeeze it and let go.

So movement isn't just allowed. It's lunch.

What has receipts, from human studies and US activity guidelines:

Keep moving, and don't fear the jog. In a review of more than 100,000 people, recreational runners had less hip and knee arthritis than non-runners. It's observational, and elite-level mileage looked worse.

Lift things, at any age. In a 1994 trial, nursing-home residents averaging 87 years old did 10 weeks of strength training. Their strength more than doubled, and they walked faster.

Carry a little less. In older adults with knee arthritis and extra weight, each pound lost took about four pounds of load off the knee with every step.

Add balance. US guidelines tell older adults to mix balance training with cardio and strength work.

None of it comes in a vial. Your knees didn't read the forum post anyway.

So what is Cartalax?

Cartalax is the name usually given to AED, a peptide just three amino acids long: alanine, glutamic acid and aspartic acid. A peptide is simply a short chain of amino acids, the building blocks of protein.

It comes from the "bioregulator" program at Vladimir Khavinson's institute in St. Petersburg, Russia. The big idea there is that tiny peptides slip into cells and nudge which genes switch on. Think of it as a text message to the cell's instruction manual.

That idea comes mostly from the institute's own lab work and computer models. It hasn't been widely tested anywhere else.

Fun family fact, if you follow longevity peptides: Epitalon, the institute's most famous one, is AEDG. Cartalax is Epitalon with the last letter dropped. Same lab, same alphabet, shorter word.

What did the dish studies show?

In 2023, the institute's team grew aging human cartilage cells in dishes. AED turned down the inflammatory "old cell" signals those cells give off.

A second dish study used aging stem cells, the kind that can turn into cartilage. AED switched on cartilage-building genes.

Earlier papers from the same group found similar "younger-looking" changes in aging skin cells. The animal work is a handful of rat studies, and the one we read was about kidneys, not knees.

If you've seen a forum chart claiming Cartalax regrew cartilage by some exact percent, we couldn't find that number in any paper we read.

That's a real, if small, pile of lab work. But you can't hand a dish a flight of stairs.

Has anyone tested it in people?

Not in any trial we could find. When we searched PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov this week, we found no controlled human trial of AED or Cartalax. We also found no approved Cartalax product in FDA's drug databases.

A 2023 review from the same institute says it worked well when older patients with arthritis took it by mouth. That summary gives no patient numbers, and we couldn't find the study behind it.

One more catch. Nearly every paper we found comes from the same research network. No outside lab has repeated the results, as far as we can tell. That doesn't make them wrong. It makes them unconfirmed.

If you're keeping score at home: dishes, yes. Rats, a few. People, zero.

Your cartilage eats when it gets squeezed. A text message tested only in dishes doesn't squeeze anything.

Literature, not lore.

If you remember one thing…

Your joints are fed by movement, backed up by strength and balance, and spared by carrying less load. Cartalax is a three-letter lab peptide with dish data, a few rat studies and no human trials.
