Food Noise Has a Second Volume Knob. It's Called Amylin.
That constant snack chatter in your head has a name now. The habits that quiet it have receipts, and the hormone behind Novo's next weight-loss shot is still waiting on the FDA.

Food Noise Has a Second Volume Knob. It's Called Amylin.
It's 3 p.m. You ate lunch an hour ago. And your brain is still narrating the vending machine down the hall. People have a name for that now: food noise.
In September, Novo Nordisk put that exact phrase in a press release about a weight-loss shot built on a hormone most people have never heard of. Let's start with what you can do at lunch, then meet the hormone.
Why is my brain so loud about snacks?
Partly because of what's on the plate. At the NIH, 20 adults lived in a research ward for a month. For two weeks they ate mostly ultra-processed meals. For two weeks they ate mostly unprocessed ones. Both menus offered the same calories, sugar, fat, fiber and salt, and everyone could eat as much or as little as they wanted.
On the ultra-processed weeks, people ate about 500 more calories a day. Nobody told them to. That's roughly a fast-food burger nobody remembers ordering.
They gained about two pounds in those two weeks, then lost about two on the unprocessed menu. Twenty people is small, but it was tightly controlled and randomized.
A couple of habits with that kind of backing:
Build most meals from foods that still look like food. Eggs, beans, fruit, vegetables, plain meat or fish, rice. Not a ban on chips, just fewer of them.
Lead with protein. In a University of Washington study, 19 people doubled the protein share of their diet while keeping carbs the same. They felt fuller, and over 12 weeks they ate roughly 440 fewer calories a day without trying.
Honest limit on that second one: it was small, and everyone switched diets in the same order, with no separate comparison group. Still, protein keeps showing up as the "I'm good, thanks" nutrient.
Wait, what's amylin?
Think of your fullness system as a stereo with more than one volume knob. GLP-1, the hormone the Ozempic family copies, is one knob. Amylin is another.
When you eat, the same pancreas cells that release insulin also release amylin. It's insulin's quiet roommate. It tells your brain you've had enough and slows how fast your stomach empties.
This isn't fringe science. A lab-made amylin lookalike called pramlintide has been an FDA-approved diabetes drug since 2005, used alongside mealtime insulin. Approved for blood sugar, not for weight loss.
So what is cagrilintide?
It's Novo Nordisk's long-acting version of amylin, built to last a week instead of a few hours. In a 2021 trial of about 700 adults, the highest amount tested took off around 11% of body weight in six months, versus about 3% on placebo.
Then came the big one. In a 68-week trial of about 3,400 adults, cagrilintide on its own came in around 12% weight loss, versus about 2% on placebo, if people stayed on it. That came from a later breakdown Novo presented, not the main headline.
The headline was the combo. Cagrilintide plus semaglutide, sold to the FDA as CagriSema, averaged about 20% weight loss versus 3% on placebo.
GLP-1 drugs turned one knob way up. CagriSema is a bet that turning two knobs beats cranking one.
Does two knobs actually beat one?
Not against everyone. In an 84-week head-to-head where everyone knew which drug they got, CagriSema averaged about 20% weight loss. Tirzepatide, the Zepbound molecule, averaged about 24%. CagriSema failed to show it was at least as good.
The "food noise" news is newer. At a diabetes meeting in September, Novo shared a year-long brain-scan study: people on CagriSema reacted less to pictures of tempting food and reported fewer cravings. Interesting, but so far it's a conference abstract and a company press release, not a full paper. Novo ran or paid for every trial in this section.
So is it approved?
Not yet. Novo filed with the FDA in December 2025 and says a decision is expected this quarter.
Cagrilintide by itself isn't approved anywhere. Its own large trials started late last year, and the first one isn't expected to finish until 2027. The FDA also says cagrilintide can't be used in compounding, and it has warned online sellers who pitched "research" cagrilintide for weight loss.
Literature, not lore.
If you remember one thing…
Food noise is real, and the boring fixes have receipts: mostly real food, protein first. Amylin is a genuinely interesting second knob, but the drug built on it is still waiting on its verdict.
